Indian government warms 6 states as more locust swarms can attack, high alert

Recently, through information, we got to know that more swarms of crop-eating locusts are going to migrate from Somalia to some summer breading areas like India-Pakistan border. This is information given by the agricultural ministry in a statement on July 5th, 2020, the officials further said that six states of India are at high risk of having this locust attack. Moreover, they have informed those three states to be there on high alert as India already faced were damaging locust attack in the month of April and June. People are wondering why this year is becoming so very difficult.

Sources said that operations have already started in the six states to control this infestation. The states that are on high alert are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The invasions have already caused crop losses according to the status updated on July 3rd, 2020. Probing further, the FAO (UN Food and Agricultural Organization) claimed that this locust invasion from Africa is one of the worst in 70 years and is posing a serious risk to the country’s agriculture.

Currently, the immature locusts are there active in Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, and Nagpur, Sikar, Jaipur, and some parts of the Madhya Pradesh. Seeing this an inter-ministerial group has been empowered to protect the country’s progressing Kharif or summer-sown crops. Moreover, this group has hired five technology firms to provide drones up to 50 kg each, apart from the helicopters hired by Pawan Hans Ltd. Therefore, the use of drones is going to be very effective and something new. India should try to maintain enough production and supply of Malathion so that the main pesticide gets effective against locust.
