Nick Clair

Bhuvan Bam ki vines, popularly known as BB Ki Vines, are a rage amongst the youngsters. Started off as a solo upload on Facebook with 15 views on his video, Bhuvan Bam now has 4 Million subscribers and Followers on his YouTube channel and his Facebook page- BB ki vines, which he launched in June 2015.

The first video he uploaded on Facebook was made as a reaction to an insensitive question asked by a news reporter regarding the death of her son in Kashmir floods. After that he made a video called, ‘I am feeling horny’, which was an instant success, going viral not just in India but also in Pakistan.

Bhuvan Bam, who has been invited as the speaker at TEDx twice, once at IIT Delhi and the second time at Jaypee University of Information Technology in 2016, initially started his career as a musician and a performer in a Delhi bar. He also composed the songs he performed on stage on his own, the most famous of which is ‘Teri Meri Kahani’.

His song, ‘Ban-Chod’, which was in response to the strings of bans that the Indian Government was imposing, went viral and earned him not just fame but also landed him into a lot of controversies.

Bhuvan Bam films his videos using the front camera of his phone, and takes turns to play multiple characters himself, one shot at a time.

Some of the characters, apart from himself as BB, that he has created on screen are – BB’s Father, BB’s Mother, Sameer Fudi, Banchod Das Chatriwala ( Bancho), Chatriwala’s Father, Mr.Hola, Masterji, Mrs Verma, Happy Naukar and Dr. Sehgal.

His videos, which are hardly ever 10 minutes long, takes up the issues that the urban teenagers can relate to – Valentine’s Day, exams, parents, house help, girlfriends and teachers. His videos are filled with humor and bawdy overtones.

For his viral videos, Bhuvam Bam was awarded the Most Popular Channel on YouTube at the WebTV Asia Awards 2016 conducted in Seoul, South Korea. He was also felicitated by the Hindustan Times at the first edition of their Game Changer Awards.

He talks about his life before and after the success of BB ki vines in his TEDx videos. He says that the most important thing to do is to follow your passion even if you do not get any support from family or friends. He realizes how difficult it is, particularly in this field, to resist content replication. People are ready to scavenge over your work and take away the credit for your hard work and creativity. Such situations, he says, taught him not to give in to the pressure from famous media houses and stand up for himself.

According to Bhuvan Bam, the main reason why his videos go instantly viral, is their original content and general relatability. His videos resonate with the youth as they can see themselves in the characters that he creates on screen. The way his characters talk, the situations they find themselves in and their reactions to it, are very realistically portrayed by Bhuvan Bam. And this is perhaps, the greatest reason behind his success.
