Neurology, The Study Of The Human Nervous System

Sahil Arora

Neurology the study of nervous system. It deals with diagnosis, treatment of different kinds of neurological conditions and nervous diseases. All these involve the peripheral and the central nervous systems.  This practice depends on the neuroscience. It is defined as the systematic study of the human nervous system.

A neurologist is a physician who specializes in neurology. Neurologists have to train,  investigate and treat various neurological disorders. Neurology is not a surgical specialty. Overlap occurs between the specialties of psychiatry and neurology. There are many neurological disorders. A serious disorder can damage the spinal cord and the brain, autonomous, peripheral and muscular nervous system.

During the neurological examination, a neurologist assesses the patient. Here are some of the facts that are evaluated. These are:

  • The mental status of the patient
  • Cranial nerves function of the patient. These functions include coordination, reflexes, vision, sensation etc.
  • Medical history of the patient
  • Cognitive function of the patient
  • Motor functions of the patient

In some case, an additional diagnostic is done. Scans, MRIs, ultrasound of blood vessels, EMG, EEG, NCSs are done to test the neural condition of the patients. Often, many neurological disorders occur due to genetic influences. Cerebral spinal fluid is analyzed to detect any grave problems or disorders. Some very common neurological conditions are headaches, stroke, seizures, epilepsy, dementia, neuropathy, radiculopathy, Alzheimer’s disease, Tourette’s syndrome, head trauma, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders, sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, brain deaths and many others.

Several nonmedical doctors with PhDs and doctoral degrees continue researches on the human nervous system.  They are neuroscientists, whose main work is to continue biological, chemical and physiological experiments. They work in laboratories, universities, private companies, hospitals etc. The neuroscientists execute laboratory and clinical experiments and convey hypothetical theories. They execute tests to know more information about the diseases of nervous system.

There are many academic, teaching and training hospitals who teach and prepare students to be expert neuroscientists or neurosurgeons. The best neuro hospital in India thrives on saving the patients’ lives. These world-class hospitals offer easy solutions and cheap treatments to the patients with mental conditions, with the help of specialized and scientific interaction sessions or surgeries.

Neurology is one of the most complicated fields of sciences and medical sciences. It deals with nerves, blood vessels, effector tissue, muscles, neurons etc. The brain and the spinal cord falls under its category. Even in the 21st century, a huge part of the brain is not completely understood by men.  Scientists are continuing their researches and experiments every day to know about the various mysterious and unknown functions of the human nervous systems. Neurology, even today is based on a lot of guesswork and theoretical interpretation, assumptions and postulated hypothetical statements. A lot of the human brain and nervous system is still left to be discovered and understood. The best neurological centers and hospitals are trying to unveil these mysteries of the human brain. The more such unanswered questions will be answered, more the human race will move towards the advancements and glory.
