Here’s a breather for the commuters of Chandigarh. Three Flyovers which had been planned to ease the traffic on roads will soon become a reality. A Mumbai based consultant, Stupor Constructions has been roped in to give shape to the project. In its presentation to the administration the company has suggested two levels of flyover which will connect Chandigarh with Zirakpur flyover. An elevated road has also been envisaged from Chandigarh to Zirakpur. Here is a brief overview of the project

Salient features

  • Unlike what had been planned earlier, the Tribune flyover will not have a clover leaf design.
  • An underpass will be constructed for commuters going to and coming from Mohali. For the same the height of the Tribune chowk will be raised by 2.5 meters.
  • Along with the above, two elevated roads have also been proposed from GMCH roundabout to the railway overbridge and go on to connect Zirakpur flyover.
  • The proposed project will cost around Rs. 900 crores, a massive drop from the earlier estimated Rs.1600 crores.

Similar Flyovers Planned

The city administration has deliberated the construction of two more flyovers at the congested areas in Sector 26 and the CHB junction in Sector 9. Alternative routes are also being considered for the tricity to reduce traffic snarls.

  • A study shall be conducted on of each rotary to effect improvements according to the traffic size.
  • Non-motorized tracks (NMTs) for pedestrians and cyclists which will have convergence and divergence at adequate distance to avert mishaps.
  • Apart from these measures, the administration is also targeting to reach out to the commuters through awareness programmes. The lane system will be strictly enforced and the traffic police will be assisting commuters to get a hang of the system and light indicators.

Chandigarh has the highest per capita vehicle population. About 1 lakh new vehicles hit the roads annually. With the increasing traffic the management becomes an uphill task and the city roads witness much congestions and utter chaos. Takingcognizance of the situation, the comprehensive plan aims to find a lasting solution to the problem. The Union territory is famously known as the first planned city of India. With an upcoming roadmap to tackle traffic issues the city not only lives up to its reputation, but also sets a precedent for all major cities across the country grappling with traffic bottlenecks. Surely other cities can take a cue and effectively plan to ease their traffic woes.
